Azadi Freedom T-Shirt

The Story Behind the Design

Palestine, Kurdistan, Iran and Yazidi culture each carry their own history. In this collage, their colours, fruits, crafts and memories come into conversation. They speak of home, inherited knowledge and people seeking to live freely and determine their own future.

Azadî is the Persian and Kurdish word for freedom. It also forms part of the call Jin, Jiyan, Azadî – Woman, Life, Freedom. The feminist slogan has Kurdish roots and became known around the world through the women-led protest movement in Iran. It challenges patriarchal rule, state violence and systems that take away women’s control over their bodies, voices and lives.

The peacock and sun lead into Yazidi culture. The peacock recalls Tawûsê Melek, the Peacock Angel and a central figure in the Yazidi faith. The sun represents light, life and continuity. These symbols belong to a community that has endured persecution, displacement and attempted destruction while preserving its religion, culture and memory.

The watermelon, orange, key, date palm and pomegranate tell stories of Palestine. The watermelon carries the colours of the Palestinian flag and became a visible sign of Palestinian identity. The oranges recall Jaffa, its groves and stolen land. The key represents the homes from which Palestinians were expelled during the Nakba and their right of return. The date palm and pomegranate evoke agriculture, fertility and a deep connection to the land.

The knotted carpet patterns draw on a craft through which shapes, knowledge and family histories pass from one generation to the next. Every surface adds another memory to the composition. The result is a many-voiced image of cultures whose people live through occupation, persecution, state violence and patriarchal oppression while carrying their identity, language and history forward.

Azadî – freedom runs through the entire design. The call belongs to women, Palestinians, Kurds, Yazidis and everyone denied dignity and self-determination. This T-shirt carries their stories and the demand for a future shaped by freedom and peace.
