The circular emblem on the front of the hoodie frames a watermelon slice shaped like the outline of Palestine with the words THIS IS NOT A WATERMELON. Red flesh, black seeds and the white-and-green rind echo the colours of the Palestinian flag. What first appears to be a summery fruit design carries a history of censorship, resistance and Palestinian visibility.
The Story Behind the Design
After the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip in 1967, public displays of the Palestinian flag in the occupied territories were suppressed and banned for years. The restrictions extended into art. Palestinian artist Sliman Mansour later recalled that the Israeli military closed an exhibition in Ramallah in 1980 and that an officer prohibited works using red, green, black and white. To illustrate how far this ban could reach, the officer is said to have mentioned a watermelon.
A cut watermelon carries exactly these colours: red flesh, black seeds and a green-and-white rind. The fruit is also part of everyday life and food culture in Palestine and across the region. A familiar food thus became a symbol capable of keeping Palestinian identity visible when the flag itself was suppressed.
The precise origin of the symbol is told in different ways. Its meaning today is clear: the watermelon stands for Palestine, resistance to occupation and censorship, and the right to freedom and self-determination. It appears in art, at demonstrations and wherever Palestinian voices are meant to remain visible.
THIS IS NOT A WATERMELON captures this history in a single phrase. The design does not simply show a piece of fruit. It shows Palestine in a form that has outlasted attempts to ban it and carries forward a message of dignity, memory and freedom.
