The story behind the design
Since the Nakba of 1948, Palestinians have been displaced, dispossessed, and scattered across borders and refugee camps. Since 1967, Israel has occupied the West Bank, including East Jerusalem; under international law, the Gaza Strip also forms part of the Occupied Palestinian Territory. In 2024, the International Court of Justice found Israel’s continued presence in this territory unlawful and stated that it must end as rapidly as possible.
Millions of Palestinians still live without the rights and security of a universally recognized sovereign state. Many are stateless or registered as refugees; others live under occupation, blockade, displacement, and a system that restricts their movement, political participation, and access to their own land.
As of October 2026, 157 of the 193 UN member states recognize Palestine as a state. Palestine nevertheless remains a non-member observer state at the United Nations. Influential countries that still withhold recognition include the United States, Germany, Italy, and Japan; Israel also denies Palestinians a sovereign state. In 2024, the United States used its veto in the UN Security Council to block full Palestinian membership. This policy sustains imperial power relations by making a people’s right to self-determination dependent on the strategic interests of powerful states and their support for Israel.
