The large front design makes the demand END THE OCCUPATION impossible to overlook. Its clear typography turns the hoodie into a visible statement against Israel’s occupation of Palestine. It stands for freedom, equal rights and political self-determination from a Palestinian perspective.

The Story Behind the Design

For Palestinians, occupation has shaped daily life for generations through land dispossession, checkpoints, military violence, home demolitions, imprisonment, settler attacks and restrictions on movement and political self-determination. END THE OCCUPATION demands an end to this system and equal rights, safety and freedom for Palestinians.

The roots of this history reach back to the early Zionist movement. Leading figures within that movement explicitly described their own project in the language of the time as colonisation. In 1902, Theodor Herzl sought the support of British colonial politician Cecil Rhodes and presented the Zionist plan as a colonial project. In 1923, Vladimir Jabotinsky wrote that the Indigenous Palestinian Arab population would not voluntarily consent to Zionist colonisation. Institutions such as the Jewish Colonial Trust also carried this claim openly in their names.

The modern term settler colonialism is a later scholarly and human-rights analysis. It describes a structure in which an externally supported settlement movement permanently controls land, displaces or disenfranchises the Indigenous population and establishes its own political order in their place. The movement’s own historical vocabulary reveals its political ambition. Palestine was already a populated country, and its people were denied the power to decide their own future.

In 1917, Britain’s Balfour Declaration promised support for a “national home” for the Jewish people in Palestine. Britain thereby claimed authority over a land it did not own and excluded the Palestinian population from deciding its future. The Nakba followed in 1948, bringing mass displacement and dispossession. Since 1967, Israel has occupied the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and controlled Palestinian life through military rule, settlements and an unequal legal system.

In 2024, the International Court of Justice concluded that Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is unlawful and must end as rapidly as possible. It also reaffirmed that Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are maintained in violation of international law. A system that deprives one people of land, freedom of movement and political self-determination contradicts the principles of equal dignity and equal rights.

Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, analyses this reality as settler colonialism. In her 2024 report Genocide as Colonial Erasure, she wrote: “Only justice can heal the wounds that political expedience has allowed to fester.” The design carries that demand into public view: the occupation must end so that Palestinians can live freely, safely and with self-determination on their land.
